2023–24
From the
chair & CEO

It is difficult to think of a time in our history, where cricket’s currents have run as fast and as unpredictably than they are today.
This is why it is important that the ACA has continued to build on its strong financial position. It is something that provides the Australian player movement with the not only the resilience to deal with the challenges that will likely come with an increasingly complex cricket economy, but also ensure we are well positioned to maximise the opportunities that come our way.
The ACA finds itself in such a position thanks to years of astute financial management. This has recently been buttressed through the proceeds from the ACA-CA joint venture for the non-fungible token (NFT) program.
Our solid asset base will underpin the financial sustainability of the ACA for years to come and ensure we remain a vital partner in steering the fortunes of Australian cricket – fortunes that over the past twelve months saw us retain the Men’s and Women’s Ashes and win the Men’s ODI World Cup in India.
Just as importantly, it puts us in a strong position to continue to deliver for you, our members – for current, past, and future players.
As strong as our position is, it does not mean our work is done. Instead, it provides us with an enviable base from which build on the significant achievements of the past – such as embedding a revenue share model and leading the push towards gender equity in Australian sport – and build a robust model for the game of the future.
Today, more than ever, the ACA must play a substantive role, in elevating the voice of the players, to better shape the future and protect all those things about our game that has endeared it to generations of Australians.
The ACA’s strong financial position reflects our belief in the strength of our game and the positive impact it can have for our members, not only today and in the future, but importantly for those who came before and enjoyed similar careers, but very different conditions to those our players enjoy today – conditions further enhanced through the most recent MOU between the ACA and Cricket Australia that came into effect in July.
The most recent MOU, that takes us through to 2028 is an agreement that strengthens the partnership and enshrines the revenue share agreement and recognises the importance of the players to the health of our game.
It also ushers in a 66% increase in payments to our women cricketers, as well as more national and state contracts.
Our female domestic cricketers now have an additional chance to increase their remuneration through the introduction of the Spring Challenge, which we advocated for to ensures games are not lost from a compacted WBBL – as well as providing an opportunity for players who may not get a chance to play much WBBL, to showcase their skills.
We acknowledge that the competition fell a little short of what we'd wanted, but hope that as early as next season, we can take some significant steps in moving towards a more meaningful competition that sheds its 'pre-season' moniker and is played at club grounds in a tournament setting.
Importantly, they also reflect a commitment from all parties to grow the game – and there is enormous capacity for growth right across the women’s game, as well as the men’s.
Meeting the moment
To maintain this linear course of advancement, let alone stay ahead of the curve in a complex and dynamic environment, is a difficult challenge.
The cricket world is marked by rapid changes in how and where players choose to apply their craft, as well as emerging technologies and global shifts, notably the rise of an affluent India.
India’s economy is now the world’s fifth largest, now surpassing that of the United Kingdom. The country’s sprawling diaspora, has been reported by The Economist as being bigger and more influential than any in history.
And due largely to the success of the Indian Premier League, cricket’s traditional model is besieged by with new entrants into the market more aligned to the franchised, shorter forms of the game. South Africa sending what was effectively a Second XI Test team to tour New Zealand in February after prioritising its domestic T20 tournament, is a harbinger to a future that threatens to undermine the appeal of the five-day game – a format that underwrites the revenue the Australian game receives from broadcasters.
Combining the two leads you to a line Gideon Haigh wrote:
Increasingly, it is India’s world, we just live in it, and need to start pulling our weight, or the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will just become part of the IPL pre-season.
To meet this moment and to maintain our unique place in cricket’s landscape, it is necessary that the ACA continually adapts and refines its strategy.
A lot of work has gone into the ACA’s new long-term strategic plan, which has been thoroughly and carefully developed with wide consultation over the past 18-months.
The ACA Strategic Plan will ensure the basic elements of what we do as a players’ association continue to be our major focus – that we continue to meet our members’ expectations by aligning our operations and offerings with changing demands.
We will also aim to augment our position of financial strength by continuing to improve our operational efficiency and reduce or realign costs where possible. This will include exploring innovative ways to streamline our processes, optimise our resources and have an organisation that is productive and fit for purpose.
Such an organisation, working in a desirable industry will attract and retain the best talent that will underlie this success. Our team is one that is already skilled and motivated, but this is something we should not take for granted, but instead, something on which we should aim to continually improve.
All of this, combined with a strong foundation provided by us maintaining financial sustainability and long-term independence, will have us well placed to identify further opportunities for innovation and growth.
We say this as the ACA must not only retain its relevancy to members, but should also play a substantive role, in elevating the voice of the players, to better shape the game.
The ACA’s bullish intent toward the future of the game and our belief in Australian cricket is what underpins our vision of thriving members connected to a healthy game.
Already, our past player program makes stronger the ties that run through Club, First Class and International Cricket to improve the Australian game at all levels. This included opportunities for our members to share their knowledge and passion within grassroots and Premier Cricket through paid coaching, Game Development appearances and the Premier Cricket Program. These partnerships are built into the MOU and have seen our current players commit funding from their portion of the game’s revenue to areas that need assistance.
The ACA also continues to provide a wide range of services to support our members, be it through the ACA Medical Support Scheme; Wellbeing Support; Personal Development Grants; or our free member Health Checks that this year was provided to hundreds of our members.
These are real and tangible benefits that help all our members be the best person they can be and is one small way of letting them know that they are, and will continue to be, a valued part of the Australian cricket story.
And the team at the ACA is also an important part of this story. Together, we would like to thank our Board, our Player Delegates and our Staff. The outcomes realised over the past year, and reported in this Report are testament to the passion and dedication they bring to our organisation.

Cricket
Operations
On 1 July 2023, a new five-year MOU commenced, benefiting all our players across both domestic and international cricket.
The MOU is the realisation of the continuing work of strengthening our partnership with Cricket Australia, having well and truly embedded the revenue share model. It is a model that gives our players some ‘skin in the game’ as we work with all our partners in Australian cricket to continue to grow the game and provide the best competitions possible – and the ACA's long-held belief is that if you want the best competition, you must have the best players playing.
The MOU also represents the ACA’s ongoing advocacy for the female game and gender equity. All our CA contracted women are recognised as full-time athletes, and all our domestic players have moved closer to being able to ply their trade as full-time professionals. Under the first year of the agreement, the WBBL salary cap doubled, and with it the average player retainer. More than that, the average combined payments for a player with WBBL and State Female contracts increased by close to 70 per cent.
Further uplift was achieved toward the end of the 2023-24 period with the announcement of the Spring Challenge.
Following the 2022–23 season Cricket Australia made the decision to reduce the WBBL to a 10 game per side competition.
The ACA discussed this proposal from CA with the principles of:
- Playing opportunities were not lost and an opportunity for more domestic players to play more matches.
- An opportunity to increase professionalisation (increase Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) & overall remuneration.
It is no secret that the ACA also took it as an opportunity to encourage Cricket Australia to introduce multi format cricket into domestic women's game within State environment, as well as introduce some T20 games for State contracted players.
While the tournament fell short of what we'd advocated for, we hope that as early as next season significant steps can be taken in moving towards a more meaningful competition that sheds its 'pre-season' moniker and is played at club grounds in a tournament setting.
Nonetheless, while not perfect it has seen the introduction of a new standalone competition with two tiers of contracts (most players receiving tier 1 contracts). Tier 1 and Tier 2 Retainer Amounts are as follows:
- Tier 1 Retainer Amount: $7,000
- Tier 2 Retainer Amount: $4,000
It should be emphasised that a stronger women’s game is a stronger Australian game – one that will benefit all – male player, female player, current player and past player alike.
These important gains have occurred within the broader role of providing representation and assistance for all our current players across:
- Issue management and advocacy
- Scheduling
- Security and safety
- Representation on groups that govern game decisions.
This work is informed by all our players through the help of our player delegates.

Survey Highlights
During 2023–24 the ACA conducted a player survey to determine those issues that are important, as well as those issues and areas that require more attention and advocacy.
Highlights of this survey included those areas in which where the ACA’s work and advocacy are paying dividends:

Member
Services
Now entering its second decade, the ACA’s Member Services’ programs play a crucial role in meeting our vision of thriving members connected to a healthy game. The funding for this program comes from a share of World Cup profits when hosted in Australia. This was negotiated in the 2012–2017 and 2017–2022 MOUs as a way of acknowledging the legacy of previous generations that have created the conditions our players enjoy today.
For us, “thriving members” means being engaged, empowered, happy and healthy. It means our members feel they are better for having been involved in Australian cricket. Throughout 2023–24, the Past Player Program provided a wide range of support to our members’ personal development, this included:

Past player program
83
ACA members supported through the Medical Support Scheme
$33,397
invested in the provision of Wellbeing Support through confidential counselling services to past playing members and their immediate family, as well as wellbeing support
236
members accessed the ACA’s free Health Checks held in each state, as well as reimbursements provided for members in regional areas unable to attend
575
payments totalling $232,997 for Health and Wellbeing Grants for health, wellbeing, education and career-related services.
Member Services also provides opportunities for members to remain “connected” to the game by sharing their knowledge and passion within grassroots cricket, as well as through paid coaching and Game Development appearances. It also provides opportunities for our members to remain connected to the game through our ACA Masters Tours, which was held in Loxton, South Australia.
Initiatives such as these help to promote a ‘healthy game’ – one that sets the standard locally and globally, continues to grow and is a sport of choice.
$321,800 allocated to the Game Development Program, which engaged 122 different past player members in appearances supporting grassroots/club cricket. It also saw 15 current female players engaged.
The ACA’s Player Partnerships include several initiatives to improve Australian cricket at all levels. These partnerships are built into the MOU and have seen players commit funding from their portion of the game’s revenue to areas that need assistance.
These programs include the Grassroots Cricket Fund that has committed up to $30 million from the players’ share of revenue to be invested in supporting and strengthening Australian community cricket. Areas of investment include grants for equipment and to support volunteers, as well as contributions to the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund that helps develop facilities for community cricket.
Since the program’s launch in 2018-19, the Grassroots Cricket Fund has delivered $17.7 million of support to more than 2,400 clubs in grants. This includes funding allocated to facilities, State & Territory grants, Masters and the Premier Cricket Program.
The ACA also provides support through our Elite Coaching Program which helps subsidise the cost of coaching accreditation, as well as the ACA Premier Cricket Program that supports our members to play, coach or mentor in Premier Cricket around the country.

In 2023–24, the ACA supported
16
members supported to complete representative (Level Two) and high-performance (Level Three) coach accreditation
$826,500
funding distributed to Premier Cricket Clubs to engage 162 ACA members in the ACA Premier Cricket Program
The Loxton Masters Tour was a great way to reconnect with past players I have played with but also connect with players I have not met before but can learn so much from.

Player Development and Wellbeing (GamePlan)
Player Development and Wellbeing (GamePlan)

The ACA continues to be committed to the development of its members on and off the field.
GamePlan is the ACA’s wellbeing and education program focused on empowering players to be healthy, balanced and capable people leading successful lives on and off the field. GamePlan is supported by Player Development Managers (PDMs) across the country who provide a tailored approach to players’ needs, individually and collectively, across the pillars of: MyWellbeing, MyEducation, MyCareer and GamePlan Next.
In 2023–24, a total of
$2,184,513
was allocated to provide a comprehensive suite of services to players
$1,590,093
was granted to State and Territory Associations and Cricket Australia for the employment of PDMs
MyWellbeing
The Australian Cricket Wellbeing Framework supports players with developing skills and strategies to navigate their way within the high-performance environment and beyond. PDMs implemented the Wellbeing Framework in various distinctive ways, including the delivery of content to their playing group through methods such as self-discovery sessions, self-reflection workshops, and an exploration of their Hogan Personality profiles.
Wellbeing Referral Network
The ACA also continued to support current and transitioning members in accessing confidential psychology and psychiatry services, with 577 sessions during the period.

In 2023–24
$166,409
was paid towards wellbeing services with members

MyCareer Refresh
National Careers Institute Partnership (NCIP) Grant
Since being awarded an NCIP Grant in April 2022, the ACA partnered with Bendelta and Become Education to review existing career services, understand the evolving career transition needs of players and develop a suite of tools that enable PDMs to provide personalised support that meets players where they are at regarding off-field career development. Throughout 2023-24, the team have been incorporating these updates into a refreshed approach to MyCareer and strengthening the capability of PDMs to incorporate this evolution into their day-to-day interactions with players, fostering tangible support for off-field career exploration that continuously evolves.
Cricket Internships
The ACA Internship Program offers paid sport administration internships for players to develop their careers and foster the next generation of cricket industry leaders.
Work Placement Program
The Work Placement Program focuses on providing cricketers with work experience opportunities in a range of different environments outside of their sport so that players can:
- Gain insight and exploration of potential career pathways
- Gain experience in areas where the player might be studying
- Widen their network in their chosen industry
In 2023–24
6
Cricket Internships were delivered
22
Work Placements were arranged across a range of industries including Finance, High Performance Sport Team Operations, Physio and Exercise Science, Emergency Services, and Real Estate
MyEducation
Education Grants
Players are encouraged to pursue education and training opportunities. ACA’s education grants continue to be well utilised amongst players.
In 2023–24
$558,067.97
funding provided across 303 grants for 188 members

Sports Science Sport Medicine (SSSM) Pathway Program
With several women’s coaching and leadership programs already in play across the country for current and former players, the ACA identified an opportunity to support a sustainable talent pathway for current and former cricketers with appropriate qualifications in SSSM.
Despite many members having studied in Exercise Science or Physiotherapy, we aren’t seeing that translated into those who continue to work in this capacity within cricket once they finish playing.
The goal of the SSSM Pathway Program is to pilot a pathway program for such cricketers through mentoring and work placement opportunities.
Female Leadership Program
The Female Leadership Program, led by former Australian Cricket Captain, Belinda Clark, was specifically designed to provide individualised programs that are tailored towards the individual’s leadership focus areas from June throughout the season with the program concluding in March.
The 2023-24 Program provided nine female contracted players with the opportunity to focus on developing self-awareness, enriching their leadership strengths and improving their confidence and capability to lead in their desired area.
The program offers group sessions, one-to-one sessions with Belinda Clark, and links the player to a mentor within each state or territory environment for additional support. Reviews of the program consistently state that confidence, capability and team contribution increased on average across all players involved in the Program.
Since the Program’s inception in 2020, we have had 33 players come through the program with 27 progressing to leadership roles as captains in domestic, franchise and international cricket, or have become ACA Delegates.
Transition Support
During the past year, more than 150 members, coming off professional cricket contracts, received support through the ACA’s Transition Manager.
In alignment with the ACA’s GamePlan Next Program, the primary focus was in providing Careers and Education support (MyCareer) as they continue to develop their lives alongside sport, as well as wellbeing support (MyWellbeing) that ensures individual support from mental health practitioners.
In 2023–24
5
ACA members completed the SSSM Program
